So there’s a gotcha that we have found while working on this, and I’m curious about your opinion as trivia hosts and users.

To review: the idea is that any non-answer cast will cause a player to _lose_ points if either “Lose Points When Incorrect” is enabled or the question has a points wager. Where right now, not answering has no consequence.

In the above use-case of an individual trivia game it’s pretty straight-forward for how it will function. When a player doesn’t answer, they actually cast a “non-answer” vote that will trigger the points loss. And if they try to turn their phone off, etc., the server does a sweep and adds the non-answer for them. It will work well.

Where it gets tricker is in Advanced Team Mode.

Currently, we use a weighted average so that if a player joins an Advanced Team and then turns off their phone after a single question, it doesn’t pull the team’s average down. The algorithm considers the players “weight” which is how many questions they have answered. We added this because years ago, hosts and teams were complaining that a player would join their Advanced Team, then flake off to the bar, and ruin their team’s average by answering very few questions. Even worse, it was easy to sabotage an Advanced Team by simply joining their team and never answering a single question. Instant nosedive of the team average.

Getting the point, if we turn on the above non-answer functionality for Advanced Team Mode games, it will basically restore it back to a simple average algorithm with the above problems. As how can we know if a player walked away versus the player is choosing not to answer? Do we not add this new mode for Advanced Team Mode? Make it a setting that can be enabled/disabled? Add this to Advanced Team Mode then we lose the cool weighted average algorithm that has worked really well for a lot of years.

Just curious about your thoughts.
